Canadian Citizen Dies in U.S. Immigration Detention

(MENAFN) A Canadian national has died while being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the agency confirmed Thursday.

“Johnny Noviello, a 49-year-old citizen of Canada in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, was pronounced deceased by the Miami Fire Rescue Department June 23 at 1:36 p.m.,” ICE said in a statement, adding, “the cause of death is still under investigation.”

Noviello was being held at the Bureau of Prisons Federal Detention Center awaiting deportation when he was discovered unresponsive on June 23 at 12:54 p.m., according to the agency.

“Medical staff responded immediately and began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, automated external defibrillator shock and called 911.”

ICE records show that Noviello legally entered the United States on January 2, 1988, and was granted lawful permanent resident status on October 24, 1991.

However, on October 12, 2023, he was convicted in Volusia County, Florida, on multiple charges including racketeering, trafficking in Oxycodone, trafficking in illegal drugs, trafficking in Hydrocodone, and using a two-way communication device to aid criminal activity. He received a 12-month prison sentence.

Noviello was taken into ICE custody in May following his conviction and was undergoing removal proceedings at the time of his death, the agency noted.

ICE stated that the Canadian consulate had been informed of the incident, though Global Affairs Canada has not yet issued a public response.

Noviello’s death comes as ICE continues a broad campaign of arrests under directives from President Donald Trump, who has intensified efforts to deport undocumented immigrants.
