Paris protest condemns NATO, France’s military assistance to Ukraine
In recent developments, NATO agreed at its summit last week to substantially increase military spending, citing what it describes as a “threat” from Russia. Similarly, the European Union approved a €150 billion ($171 billion) borrowing plan last month to bolster its military capabilities. Russia has rejected claims that it poses a threat to Europe.
The Paris rally declared its mission as “defending peace and a Free France,” according to posts from the organizing party on social media. Demonstrators criticized President Emmanuel Macron for what they see as his escalating confrontational stance in European affairs.
Speaking at the event, Philippot declared, “we have no place in NATO, this criminal organization that costs us dearly and should have disappeared long ago!” He further called for a swift exit from both the EU and NATO, stating that “France must leave the EU and NATO as quickly as possible through Frexit!”
Chants and placards included slogans such as “Frexit is another name for Peace” and “The patriots for peace.” Protesters voiced strong opposition to French support for Kyiv, insisting, “don’t want to die for Ukraine.” Philippot also tweeted before the protest: “Peace means refusing to send a single euro, a single weapon, and obviously a single French soldier to #Ukraine!”
The event drew several hundred participants and was held near notable landmarks including the Palais-Royal and the Louvre museum.
