Japan Set to Raise Prices on Over 2,100 Foods in July
The total number of food items scheduled for price increases in 2025 has now climbed to 18,697, with projections indicating it could surpass 20,000 as early as next month, the report states.
A survey conducted among 195 leading food producers found that seasonings—particularly curry roux and soup stock—make up the largest share of price hikes, with 1,445 affected items.
Confectionery products, including chocolate and gum, will also see price increases, with some undergoing reductions in content size.
The report also notes that processed foods such as rice-based items and pasta sauces are among the categories impacted.
Rising raw material costs remain the most frequently cited cause for the price hikes. Labor expenses were the second most common factor and marked the highest level recorded since Teikoku Databank began collecting this data in 2023.
The report further cautioned that escalating instability in the Middle East could send crude oil, edible oil, and wheat prices even higher, potentially triggering broader and more severe inflation across food categories.
