Two US firefighters get killed in ambush during wildfire response
Emergency responders were initially sent to Canfield Mountain, a well-known area for hiking and biking, around 1:30 p.m. local time. About half an hour later, authorities received reports of gunfire in the area, according to local law enforcement.
Sheriff Robert Norris informed the press that a SWAT team had been deployed and was actively engaged in a firefight with the suspect. “We are actively taking sniper fire as we speak,” he said.
Later, officials announced that the suspected shooter’s body was found on Canfield Mountain along with a firearm nearby.
Lieutenant Jeff Howard indicated that investigators are examining whether the wildfire was deliberately set to lure firefighters into a deadly trap.
Civilians, including hikers, were seen evacuating the area as the situation unfolded. Norris cautioned that some individuals might be caught between the advancing fire and the sniper’s position.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed that federal agents were deployed to offer “tactical and operational support.” A police helicopter was sent to assist but was unable to land due to ongoing gunfire.
Idaho Governor Brad Little condemned the attack, describing it as a “heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters.”
