Sydney Protest Targets Australian Firm Supplying Arms to Israel
The protest took place outside SEC Plating on Friday, a company "involved in providing plating services for various parts used in F-35 jets," as noted by The Greens New South Wales party in their release.
The Greens stated that Israel’s "fleet of around 40 F-35 rely on the global supply chain and supplement supply from countries like Australia to continue the genocide against the Palestinian people."
Police in New South Wales reported that they issued a move-on order to around 60 protesters who reportedly attempted to obstruct pedestrian access to the business premises.
Five protesters were arrested for multiple offenses, including failing to comply with police directions and fleeing from law enforcement.
All detainees were released on conditional bail and are scheduled to appear before Bankstown Local Court on July 15.
During the arrests, a woman suffered a severe eye injury.
"During the 35-year-old woman’s arrest," former Greens candidate Hannah Thomas said, "she sustained facial injuries and was taken to Bankstown Hospital for treatment," according to police reports.
Social media has circulated images of Thomas showing a swollen, closed eye with blood on her face, with reports indicating she may risk losing her eye.
Sue Higginson, Greens lawmaker and NSW Justice spokeswoman, condemned the police actions, stating they "can only be described as brutal and excessive," adding that "there is a significant question about the lawfulness of what they have done to members of the community exercising their rights of assembly this morning.”
