Lebanon undergoes unusual water shortages crisis

(MENAFN) Lebanon is confronting an "unprecedented water shortage," the country’s Energy and Water Minister Joe Saddi warned on Tuesday, while promising additional measures to tackle the crisis.

Speaking at a press briefing, Saddi noted that rainfall this year is 51 percent below the usual range of 700 to 1,000 millimeters, and limited snowfall has further strained groundwater supplies.

To mitigate the shortage, the ministry has prepared an emergency plan that includes cracking down on violations, accelerating maintenance work, deploying extra repair teams, ensuring equitable water distribution, and reactivating dormant wells.

Addressing the four incomplete dams meant to boost water storage capacity, Saddi said he has enlisted a panel of international experts to determine the most effective technical solutions.
