Palestinian President Visits UK
A state news agency reported that Abbas is scheduled to meet UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to explore ways to support ongoing efforts to secure an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and to halt Israeli aggression in the region.
The news agency added that the two leaders will also deliberate on “enabling the State of Palestine to assume full responsibility, the implementation of a recovery and reconstruction plan, and halting all unilateral actions, including colonial settlement expansion, colonists’ terrorism, and annexation.”
Abbas and Starmer are further expected to examine strategies to strengthen bilateral relations across multiple sectors and to review preparations for an international conference on the two-state solution, where several nations, including the UK, are anticipated to recognize Palestinian statehood.
During his three-day visit, Abbas is also slated to meet other senior officials, the agency noted.
Several Western countries, such as France, Belgium, the UK, Canada, and Australia, plan to formally recognize Palestinian statehood during the forthcoming UN General Assembly meetings from Sept. 8-23, joining 147 nations that already acknowledge it.
Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of over 64,000 Palestinians since October 2023, leaving the enclave devastated and facing severe famine.
