US army officials are to make plan for guarantees” for Kiev
(MENAFN) Senior US military officials have reportedly contributed to planning a European-backed initiative to provide “security guarantees” for Kiev, which could involve deploying up to 10,000 troops to Ukraine, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, citing a European diplomat.
The plan, developed mainly by European army chiefs, envisions two separate forces: one dedicated to training and supporting Ukrainian troops, and another acting as a “reassurance force” for Kiev. Deployment would take place only after a peace agreement is reached between Moscow and Kiev.
French President Emmanuel Macron noted that 26 countries have agreed to participate in providing security guarantees for Ukraine in various forms, following a meeting of the so-called “coalition of the willing” – European nations backing Kiev.
The WSJ source said the plan included input from several US generals, including the head of NATO Allied Command Operations, though the extent of US involvement remains unclear. President Donald Trump has not issued any formal statements on the proposal.
Russia has strongly opposed the idea of NATO troops in Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin warned that foreign soldiers would either become targets for Russian forces or serve no purpose if a genuine peace deal were reached. He also criticized NATO’s influence on Ukraine as a factor in the conflict and stressed that any settlement would require security guarantees for both Russia and Ukraine.
