70,000 Government ID Photos Exposed in Discord Breach

(MENAFN) Discord, the widely used messaging and voice/video calling platform, has suffered a major data breach stemming from a compromise of a third-party customer service provider. The breach led to the unauthorized exposure of approximately 70,000 government ID photos, which were collected for age verification purposes, according to an official statement from the company.

“Of the accounts impacted globally, we have identified approximately 70,000 users that may have had government-ID photos exposed, which our vendor used to review age-related appeals,” Discord spokesperson Nu Wexler told media on Wednesday.

Following the discovery, Discord has notified all affected users and is collaborating closely with law enforcement agencies, data protection regulators, and external cybersecurity experts to address the fallout from the incident.

In response to the breach, Discord has severed ties with the third-party customer service vendor responsible for handling the sensitive data.

On October 3, the company revealed that additional personal information, including names, usernames, email addresses, the last four digits of credit cards used on the platform, and IP addresses, may also have been compromised during the breach.

This incident highlights critical vulnerabilities in third-party data handling practices and raises urgent concerns about user privacy and security on digital communication platforms.
