Two Suspects Face Charges Over Louvre Jewel Heist
The French news outlet noted that several other individuals who had been apprehended during the investigation have since been freed.
On Thursday, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau revealed that five additional arrests had been carried out in relation to the incident.
Despite these developments, the jewels taken on Oct. 19 — valued at approximately €88 million ($102.3 million) — have yet to be recovered.
The initial arrests occurred on Oct. 25. The two men, aged 34 and 39, have been formally accused and held in detention since Wednesday on allegations of participating in an organized robbery and plotting to commit a criminal act.
Investigators believe the pair were directly involved in infiltrating the museum to seize the valuable jewelry and have “partially admitted to the facts,” according to Beccuau.
In total, eight pieces were taken, including a necklace and an earring from the Marie-Louise collection, along with a necklace, a pair of earrings, and a tiara from the Marie-Amelie and Hortense collections.
Officials further confirmed that “two brooches, one of which is described as a reliquary brooch, a bodice bow, (plus) a tiara from Empress Eugenie’s collection,” were among the stolen treasures.
