ICRC Chief Urges Global Leaders to Act Amid Sudan’s Catastrophe
She described the conditions in El-Fasher and other regions as a "humanitarian catastrophe."
Mirjana Spoljaric stated, "The appalling abuses of the rules of war we are witnessing in Sudan are indefensible."
She emphasized, "No patient should be killed in a hospital, and no civilian shot while trying to flee their home."
She insisted that "these horrific attacks must stop and international humanitarian law must be respected," highlighting the grave plight of civilians enduring "brutal attacks, rampant sexual violence and the deliberate destruction of essential services."
Hospitals and health facilities, she added, "once dedicated to saving lives have become scenes of death and destruction."
Spoljaric noted that the ICRC has repeatedly appealed to the conflicting parties to honor international humanitarian law, but violations "continue to be committed with impunity."
She also strongly condemned recent assaults on humanitarian personnel, pointing out that "just this week in North Kordofan, five of our colleagues from the Sudanese Red Crescent Society were killed."
"Leaders must now show political courage to stop the killing," she stressed, underscoring that all nations have a responsibility to uphold international humanitarian law and ensure compliance worldwide.
She concluded with a stark warning: "Lives in Sudan now depend on strong and decisive action to stop these atrocities. The world cannot stand by as civilians are stripped of safety and dignity."
