Samsung Strike Averted as AI Chip Supply Disruption Is Temporarily Avoided
The deal was finalized after government-mediated negotiations just hours before tens of thousands of workers were scheduled to walk out. As a result, the planned 18-day strike has been postponed while union members vote on the tentative agreement between May 22 and 27, meaning the risk has been delayed rather than fully eliminated.
At the center of the dispute is how the financial gains from the AI-driven semiconductor boom should be distributed among employees. The union had pushed for a system in which 15% of annual operating profits would be allocated to worker bonuses, along with the removal of existing limits on performance-based payouts.
The preliminary agreement reportedly introduces a revised bonus structure and sets semiconductor workers’ share of operating profits at around 10.5%.
The situation attracted significant international attention due to Samsung’s central role in global memory chip production. The company supplies a substantial portion of both DRAM and NAND flash markets worldwide, making any disruption in its Korean manufacturing operations potentially significant for industries dependent on advanced electronics, including AI infrastructure, smartphones, and computing systems.
According to industry estimates cited in reports, a prolonged strike could have reduced global DRAM and NAND flash output and tightened already strained supply conditions, driven by rapid growth in artificial intelligence demand.
Beyond the global technology implications, the dispute also carried major economic weight for South Korea, where Samsung plays a key role in exports and industrial output. Analysts cited in reports warned that an extended work stoppage could have resulted in substantial daily financial losses for the company and measurable negative effects on national GDP growth.
